3 Steps To Taking Full Responsibility :
Career Edition
In this video me and Elena, the career consultant at the University of Manchester in Dubai who works with midlevel to senior level individuals and MBA students, share one of the main trends we have both seen a lot in our clients, lack of taking responsibility. We have seen in our own lives, those we interact with and those we now work with, that it is usually easier to blame external outside of us for what is not going well in our life. This basically refers to being a victim, giving up control which is what we unconsciously decide to be. Either a victim, or empowered. This one simple decision in life, changes everything. A victim chooses the life they have, an empowered person chooses the life they deserve, and works towards it and it all starts from taking full responsibility. A victim sees more challenges rather than opportunities. If one is not willing to take full responsibility, take control over their life, then they are not teachable and essentially not teachable.
As Elena pinpoints as well, our mind works in ways that we tend to focus and give a lot of energy on the things than we cannot control, because again it’s the easier way out. What you focus on, is what you are going to get more of. E.g. focusing on the job market not being good enough, isn’t going to attract your ideal job.
So, if you are willing to be coachable, teachable and decided to be empowered rather than a victim because you are the captain of your ship, then this video is totally for you.
Here are our main 3 tips that will reserve you well in your life and career path:
1. Acknowledge the fact that your life is your responsibility. We first have to acknowledge the fact that our life is 100% our responsibility. Taking that power back and you do this by understanding the things the things that you can and cannot control. You also have to understand yourself better in way to find out where that main trend of making excuse is, where is that coming from. You have the power to change starting from today. Its ok if you have had this habit of blaming external factors, we have all done it. All you have to do is to make this decision today that you are responsible for your life, goals, outcomes etc.
2. Decide what you want/ what your goals are. It is also natural to not know what it is that you want and there are ways to find that out as well if you’re not sure. So if you are one of those who doesn’t know what they want to do in life yet, then carry on reading. The best thing to do is to explore, experiment, trying different things, having open conversations with people and getting exposure. For younger people doing volunteering, internships are great ways to start. For more senior levels, as time might be a constraint, making time for listening to talks, podcasts, reading are also more ways to find out what you want to do. It’s all about having an open mind and being exposed to things that may click. We will never know unless we try.
This is about finding what it is that makes you tick and get into that flow. Getting into solitude and cutting out the noise and distractions is magical when it comes to focusing and finding one’s purpose. Meditation is gold here as well, which requires patience. It’s not something to expect results with after a day or two days of meditation. Stay open to new beginnings and opportunities. Power of intention really makes a huge difference as well. When you put the intention out there of what it is that you are looking for, the universe sends you signs and clues your way.
3. Take actions towards achievable goals. The first two steps don’t really matter if this final step doesn’t come into play. This is where talk about SMART goal planning, having a solid plan. Specific, Measurable, Available, Realistic, Timely goals. Elena mentions how she focuses on 1 year plan with her students as it is a lot more empowering than focusing on 5 years plan when you are first starting out. Get as specific as you possibly can about what you would your entire year to be planned; what you like to achieve. Where would like to be geographically (would you like to relocate) , on a personal level, your relationships, your friendships, where do you see yourself? Our lives have 8 dimensions not just one so we must consider all aspects of life as a whole. So make sure your taking everything into consideration when planning your goals. This is about having a clear understanding of where you want to be and then working backwords from there. Based on this, you can have daily, weekly, monthly plans, knowing what milestones you need to reach. Having a solid plan boosts your confidence further like no other and will lead you towards your goals in an orchestrated manner.
At the same time, sometimes things might work out as you have planned. Do not let it limit you, hold you back or demotivate you. It’s ok to change, change is constant in life and those are most adaptable and open to it will survive and succeed. Its about welcoming change, and learning from the experience. Be kind to yourself. Be true and authentic to yourself. At least you won’t have anything to regret as you have given it a go already. Sometimes universe has better things planned for us and we must welcome that wisdom. So take risks if it requires, trial and error, and have fun with it. Because ultimately your goal should be about something you are passionate about so it won’t have to feel like a burden to you.
