Balancing the mind,body and soul
How can one be expected to live a balanced, abundant and phenomenal life without taking these 3 factors into serious consideration?
So many lives can be seen, especially on social media where there is a lot of emphasis on the body, the mind, materialistic possessions but not so much so on the soul, or vice versa. There is a lot of interest about having a very fit body, buying into the latest fashion trends, cars, watches, yatches, who wore what, who bought what or who went where. Why is that? Why do we come across many people who have every materialistic possession they want but still don’t feel happy? Why do some people turn to drugs when to outsiders it seems they have no reason to? Why is the modern society more obsessed about taking care of their iPhones, cars, houses, doing so much maintenance for all the things that they own in this world but somewhere along the line forgot to pay attention to one’s own mind, body and soul? How come everyone is following the same trends without questioning the true purpose of them and what effects it actually has on humans holistically? These are the kind things I want to talk about.
I have personally struggled with this, where I had my financial freedom, very comfortable life, but I wasn’t happy, I felt like something was missing and that my life did not have purpose -I was not living a healthy, balanced life at all. I was blending in and following the mainstream Western society’s mentalities and practises without ever questioning anything. Thus in this blog, as well as through extensive research, I am talking from experience too. Today I strongly believe that these are issues that can be solved if a rather more holistic approach is taken in one’s life, where the person takes care of their mind, body and soul all together without abandoning one or the other.
As Adbul Hakim Murad, a British man who converted to Islam so beautifully said : “That which is done to the soul has an effect on the body and the mind, what which is done to the body has an effect on the mind and the soul, that which is done to the mind has an effect on the body and the soul. These 3 aspects of man reflected in the Hadith language in terms of Islam. The Mind, Body and Soul are so closely linked, we don’t believe in any dualism, even though historically there has been a lot of duality between the body and spirit”.
Note: As with any other case, there are always exceptions, I am not generalising everyone on social media or elsewhere to be this way. Furthermore I encourage you to contact me if any questions pass through your mind, I’d be more than happy to answer.
Warning: I would like to give you all a heads up that this blog and the one coming after it might make very little sense to some of you, you might think that in this day and age such words and beliefs are ridiculous. On the other hand to some of you, Muslims, Christians and Jews in particular, this might be just what you needed to hear and what I am writing about will either already be aligned with your beliefs or that you will make some changes after reading this. If you happen to be on the opposing group after reading this piece, please try and remain respectful as well as keeping the energy positive :).
The Mind, Body and Soul is a very very huge and overlapping subject, it has a lot to discuss and I had to cover a lot in one blog, which explains the length of this blog (this is me having tried hard to condense things for you:). But it will be worth it, I promise. So let us begin.
THE MIND
The mind, (the rational, the virtuous) that is run by the brain is most likely one of the most complicated structures in the whole universe. Muslims, Christians and Jews believe that one of the functions of the mind is to tie down our humanly temptations and endless desires, just as a brake pedal functions in a car to stop danger from occurring. If we don’t stop ourselves from doing certain things, useless things, being distracted with shameless activities; if we only make decisions based on our desires then there wouldn’t be any difference between us and animals. Many people have absolutely no control over their deepest desires, good or bad and they end up feeling fed up, psychologically drained, damaged, confused and so on. They have no break pads or what so ever, busy with wanting more and more that eventually end up like how animals live.
I am really on a mission to raise awareness for people to make time for their mind. In this hustle and bustle that we are living in today where everyone is busy with something, people seem to be finding their mind to be less of importance. Unless, unless they really hit the ground hard which will only then be a good time for them to tune in themselves and look within. Our entire body is dependant on our mind and yet we find that many neglect their unhealthy thoughts and don’t take them seriously. I see many people who immediately make time for their physical symptoms, (which starts with an unhealthy mind in the first place, if not genetically), make time religiously for they physical appearance while their mind is all over the place, have regular break downs (weekly manicure pedicure, nail or lash refill, monthly trim for the hair, regular blow drys, waxing etc ) they walk past the warnings that their mind is gives to them. The unconscious mind gives so many signs, cries for help and attention and too often we either too busy to hear, too careless or lazy.
In this part of the world, middle east, more so within the traditional families, having any difficulties in the mind is often seen as a sign of weakness and at a young age they are taught that if they have any problems, they just have to deal with it and that would be the end of story. There is stigma and prejudice for someone with severe depression, OCD, anger problems and not for someone who has cancer. Today scientific research and education have proven the reason why cancer happens in the first place, is due to stress; due to heavy amounts of pilled up negative baggage, that the person has been carrying for years. A person could even have a cancerous gene from previous generations, but if that person is positive, healthy and balanced, that gene would simply not be activated. Disease, di-ease cannot live in the body of a person who is fulfilled and satisfied with their life.
Your entire lives and your loved one’s lives can change if you invest in your mind and your thought. “Your thoughts determine the life you end up living”. How big of a statement is that? Prophet Muhammad (s.a.a.w) in this context has said: ”Actions are determined by intentions”. What are intentions? Your thoughts. Meaning your thoughts determine the actions you take, and the actions you take determine how your life turns out. Any problem that you are currently facing in your life, any dissatisfaction, lack of fulfilment, confidence, motivation, purpose, excitement, happiness, disappointment, inspiration, or experiencing boredom, worry, anxiety, confusion, conflict, anger, sadness, hurt, guilt and fear. If you are feeling any of thees in your life then thats a sign from your unconscious mind that you have some things to deal with.
Its an alarm for you to stop and finally pay attention to the things that you have been postponing or neglecting for longer than you suspect, perhaps from the time of your conception or from previous generations. I am talking about your mind, the part of your mind that runs 95% of your life, on autopilot. Because think about it, how do you expect yourself to function harmoniously if there is so much negative baggage to be dealt with? These are like blockages in your system that somehow limit you, whether you notice it or not. And what happens when there is negativity in the thoughts? Sooner or later your physical body starts getting effected too, if it hasn’t already. Knowing all this, is isn’t really a better investment out there than the one that ensures a healthy mind, healthy thoughts and intentions, is there? THE BODY
Our bodies are carrying our mind and soul, take care of them are deadly important. In Islam, Allah addresses us through the mind and its faculties of thinking. We are asked to constantly think and contemplate about why some things are said to be bad and unhealthy for us and so many times we fail to do so and become a slave to our desires and emotional mind instead. In Islam we believe in a holomorphic body, we don’t believe that we are cartesian, we don’t believe in this separation, the ghost in the machine.
We actually believe believe that there is profound relationship, which is why our worship is in the body, this is why we believe in the bodily resurrection. So the body is very important, as well as taking care of it. The body affects the soul and in turn the soul will affect the body. This is why traditionally the Islamic clergy and teachers were doctors, they studied the psychology, the humours, the body, it was very important to them to understand the nature. Much of the depression we see today, is due to being connected to all these machines all the time, which are having a negative effect on people. Don’t forget there are traditions, there are vibrations coming out effecting the brain and the brain synchronises with them. People don’t go out in nature as much anymore, they don’t look at nature, they don’t experience it, they don’t breath properly, they don’t exercise, all of these things have an effect on us. So lot of people are actually depressed because they are not taking care of their bodies, a lot of sickness for that reason.
Now Im going to talk about something very controversial, sexual relationships. This is why the modern world is so aberrantly wrong when it comes to having sexual relationships without having done the religious marriage first. It is said that sexual relationships before marriage are just fine, why not, its just a recreation just like any other recreation. We would say that, that’s because historically you have inherited a dualism between body and spirit. Muslims however, believe that these 3 aspects of humanity are closely linked. Just as if the soul gets sick, the body gets sick too. Modern doctors will acknowledge this, that any physical illnesses originate from psychological illnesses, that’s not controversial. But the opposite is true as well. If you do something momentus to the body, that’s going to have an affect on the spirit, but unfortunately the modern world can’t see that. The idea that you can be spiritually transformed by something that is done to the body is very alien-like to the modern post-cartasian dualistic mentalities. It’s not even a question of morality here, its also spirituality.
What you do to the body, has an affect on the spirit and hence affects your salvation. We in Islam link the three , as forms of Ebadat (different types of prayers) are all to do with the body, as well as to do with the mind and the spirit. The Salat is an obvious example ( 5 times day prayer), Ramadan (fasting), the Haj (visiting Mecca, and doing the rituals) . All of these deeds involve, the mind, body and soul and are reminders that we must serve Allah, our creator with everything, not just the spirit.
DIET AND SICKNESS
Our diet and exercise are very important because they directly reflect on the mind. The mind is important because it’s the ultimate authority for you. You have to makes decisions for yourself based on knowledge, not based on desires, or “I think I should do it”. It should be based on information, valid information, authorities, teachers and so on. Your mind is what is going to carry your for a very long time, and your choice of food, beverage, physical activity, physical proximity with others, heavily alter the health of your body, brain, heart, mind and spirit. Alcohol and pork are prohibited because it has an affect on the body, mind and soul.
Sicknesses are increasing day by day, and it’s interesting that people are getting sick through food as well. God created all the food, for us to get all the nutrients of it, so it can improve our health and give us energy. So how can it be that something that God has put on earth to improve our health is actually damaging our health? Prophet Mohammad ( s.a.a.w) said : Yours body has a right (Haq) over you. And the amazing thing is that this is the age of miracle and wonders, and one of the fascinating things of this time is that they have determined exactly what the right (Haq) of your body is. Its down to the calories that you consume every day, right? And if you look at the amount of calorie you should consume per day, it is pretty much coherent with the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.a.w). Most people actually eat 3 to 4 times more than they actually eat need as fuel to burn energy. Allah has told us to “eat, drink but do not go in excess and over do it” and it has been said that all of a person’s health is in these divine words. So that means then perhaps how much we are eating is of matter.
God has not designed our bodies in a way to be consuming all the foods and all the amounts that we are right now. For example, biologically you only need to eat meat once a week, your body does not need it more than that. Prophet Muhammad (s.a.a.w) did not eat a lot of meat, he was semi vegetarian. But today people eat mea every single day and sometimes more than once a day, and were offended if theres no meat at the table. As a result of this over consumption of meat, is all kinds of illnesses. Prophet Muhammad (s.a.a.w) said “ be aware of meat, because it has the addiction of wine”. And I recommend people to read 2 books if they really want to understand this stuff. One of them is called Diet for New America by John Robbins which is an analysis of the meat industry, and the wretched things that they do to animals. In Islam we are against the mistreatment of animals, have to treat them in a humane way, give them water before sacrificing then, not show them up until the last minute by pulling it out quickly, not sharpen the knife in front of them, we don’t drag it but lead it gently before sacrificing it. And now you go look at how they treat animals, its horrific and your eating that meat.
That meat that your eating has part of that reality invested in it, believe it or not. People are eating all the tortures that those animals are going through, all that fear and adrenaline that they release constantly intro their flesh. Thats why everybody in this stay of fear and anxiety. So people should really think about this. But instead we have a society filled with people in love with Macdonald’s, which has absolutely no nutritional value at all, would be better off eating the cardboard that it comes in. All this meat that is filled with hormones. Women in Puerto Ricco have developed huge breast at the age of 8 yrs old, because so much hormones (oestrogen) were used in their meats they were eating, to beef up the cattle. You can imagine for yourself what other diseases have happened as a result of excessively consuming this female hormone.
Prophet Muhammad (s.a.a.w) has said that the worse vessel that you can fill up is your stomach, just a few bites are sufficient for the son of Adam, just to keep you going. If there in no other way, and you have to, then keep a 3rd for your food, a 3rd of your drink and a 3rd for your air. This is the maximum you can do. Is that what we do today though? who eats just a few bites just to keep going? based on the fact that we should in fact eat to remain alive, to live but what happens is that we live to eat. With all these cuisines, cooking shows, eating shows, eating competitions, just about eating, eating, eating. And this is not how much we were intended to consume, its too much, and so as a result of that all kinds of illnesses arise. We eat so much that there is only a little bit of air left in our stomach, we become too uncomfortable, we search everywhere to fill up that little gap with something. And now 1 out of 2 children will be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. So the problem is how much we are eating and what we are eating.
So what we eat is deadly important. There are 2 golden rules here : 1)If a man has put a hand into it anything, any food, its bad. Just as general rule, whatever human beings have meddled with, its bad somewhere or the other or in the long term. 2) No body cares about you. No body, not the government, not the food administration, not the medical industry, no body cares about you. The only one that cares about you, is yourself. So you have to watch out for what you eat, they are not going to warn you, you have to get yourself educated on it. Let me give you some examples so you understand this better. With cattle, there is problem with oestrogen, so the cows gain weight and their meat becomes tender and soft. But what is the problem with oestrogen? Nothing destroys it, doesn’t matter if you boil the meat, broil it, fry it, whatever you do with it, it still remains in the meat.
If you milk a cow that’s been given oestrogen then the oestrogen will be in the milk. The same goes to cheese, butter and other dairy products. Its a female hormone that we do not want in our bodies which we are now getting more and more of it. Cows now milked 300 days out the year, even when they are pregnant they are milked. When they are pregnant certain components or certain oestrogen type of components increase 33 times in the milk, and they just milk it and give it to us for consumption. There was a study that was done in 42 countries to find the correlation between dairy consumption and testicular cancer. They found the strongest correlation to be in Switzerland and Denmark where cheese is one of the national foods and people consume it a lot dairy. They found the lowest relationship to be in Algeria, where people don’t consume as much dairy. So you see there are problems all over the place by having engineered food, added things to food, done crazy things to food. Mercury and fish. When you think of mercury you think of fish. There is always a problem somewhere and almost none of the processes in natural anymore. Tomatoes are picked green when they are still hard, not when they are ripe, because they don’t want them to go bad. They ripen them later on by putting them in ethane gas, that makes them go red just so it looks good to the consumer. So what is the answer for all this? If you can eat organic, eat organic. Decrease the amount of food that you eat, you really don’t need to eat that much of anything. If you can grow your own of course. Be very aware, read, be very conscious of what your putting into your bodies.
I hope that you enjoyed and benefited from part I of this topic. In the second part as well as covering up more on health/fitness and the soul, I will be talking about some juicier stuff too. I am going to thoroughly explain the truth about yoga and all the deceptions related to it when it comes to living a holistic life.
Stay tuned:)
